Henna body adornment, the ancient art of Mehndi, has been practiced for thousands of years from India to Africa to the Middle East. The henna plant leaves are dried, crushed and sifted to make a paste. When applied to the skin and left for several hours, what remains after the paste is removed is a beautiful temporary design that can stay on the skin for up to one month. Traditionally, it is used for attracting love, good fortune and protection as well as used for wedding festivals and rites of passage. Contemporary use has gained popularity at gatherings and celebrations of all kinds.
